Amnesty Int. demands Thai government end persecution of Future Forward

Amnesty International has called on the Thai government to cease its persecution and legal intimidation of the Future Forward party.

In a statement, issued today ahead of the Constitutional Court delivering its ruling tomorrow (Tuesday) in the Illuminati Case against the Future Forward party, Amnesty International said that the case, and the court's refusal to hold an inquiry prior to reaching its verdict, amounts to a violation of Thailand's commitment to human rights, the right to free expression, right to peaceful gatherings and right to association of party members.

Amnesty International has demanded that all the charges against Future Forward core members be withdrawn, claiming that they simply exercised their human rights peacefully.

As a signatory to several international human rights treaties, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), Amnesty International said that Thai authorities must adhere to the principle that every individual has the right to free expression, peaceful assembly and association.

It also urged the international community to resist human rights violations in Thailand and to monitor the Thai government's continuing intimidation and suppression of its opponents, while applying political and diplomatic pressure.
