Bangkok: "Anutin," Minister of Interior, has confirmed that governors in the southern regions are capable of managing the current flooding situation, distinguishing it from the northern regions where mudslides have exacerbated the conditions. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul emphasized that southern governors are fully prepared to address the flooding, with readiness extending beyond just the provinces currently affected. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) stands ready to provide immediate assistance to impacted areas. However, governors retain the authority to declare a disaster area and mobilize aid independently, without needing to wait for direction from the central government. According to Thai News Agency, the central government has established a committee known as the Flood, Storm, and Landslide Relief Operations Center (SRCC), led by Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. This committee has drawn lessons from the northern floods and is prepared to offer immediate support if necessary. Anutin noted that there is currently no requirement for central government aid to the South, as the situation is characterized as a general flood. The water is expected to recede more quickly, unlike in the North, where severe flash floods have resulted in significant mudslides due to topsoil loss. Anutin further highlighted the immediate need to prepare housing for those displaced by the floods, ensuring safe shelter options are available. Additionally, electricity disconnection for safety and public warnings through door-to-door notifications or online platforms are being prioritized to keep residents alert and informed.
