Bangkok: Bangkok has introduced Adaptive Control traffic light technology at 72 intersections across the city, aimed at improving traffic flow for residents. During non-rush hours, the implementation of this system has resulted in an approximately 15% improvement in traffic conditions. Data collection during rush hours is still ongoing.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, along with Mr. Wisanu Sapsompol, Deputy Governor of Bangkok, and executives from the Traffic and Transportation Department, conducted an inspection of the Adaptive Control automatic traffic light system on Sukhumvit 101/1 Road on May 5. This system adjusts the traffic lights based on real-time traffic data, unlike the current system where police manually press the traffic lights or set them on a timer.
Governor Chadchart explained that in Bangkok, around 500 traffic lights operate on automatic systems. In the existing setup, traffic lights either follow a set timer or require manual intervention by police based on their observation of traffic conditions. This sometimes results in inefficient traffic flow, such as when a green light remains on despite clear traffic, while vehicles pile up at a red light. The new Adaptive Control system uses cameras to assess traffic volume and computers to optimize the release of cars for maximum efficiency.
The technology has been installed at intersections along major roads including Sukhumvit Road, Petchburi Road, Rama IV Road, Phahon Yothin Road, and in the Silom area. There are plans to expand the system to an additional 200 intersections next year. While the pilot has shown promising results during non-rush hours, rush hour data collection is still underway, and certain intersections may require police intervention during heavy traffic.
Governor Chadchart emphasized the importance of traffic discipline, noting that even the most advanced technology cannot compensate for a lack of adherence to traffic rules by road users. The integration of smart traffic lights and human oversight is critical to achieving optimal traffic flow throughout the city.
