The Thai Dental Council (TDC) has ordered a fact-finding investigation into the conduct of a dentist in Nonthaburi province who has been accused of sexually assaulting two Thai-American sisters.

The probe follows a complaint filed with the council’s secretary-general, Somyot Nalamliang by lawyer Saranya Wangsukcharoen, representing the two alleged victims, aged 13 and 17.

Saranya told Somyot that she considers the offence allegedly committed by the dentist to be a gross violation of medical ethics, which could result in the suspension of his medical license.

She demanded that the TDC undertakes an investigation and takes disciplinary action if he found guilty.

Responding to the demand, Somyot said that the council called a special meeting of members on Wednesday, which decided to form a committee to conduct an investigation.

He promised that punitive action will be taken if the dentist in question is proved to have committed the offences as alleged.

The clinic in question is still open as normal. A staff member at the clinic said that the dentist in question has not reported for work since the allegations hit social media.

Sexual abuse of the young in Thailand has become a topic of increasing public concern and awareness as a result of the country’s highest profile #MeeToo case, in which former Democrat deputy leader Prinn Panitchpakdi was accused of sexually abusing over a dozen of women and girls over the course of several years.
