Extension of Emergency Situation Declaration for Another Month and a Half

The Cabinet on 23 November 2020 approved the extension of the period of the enforcement of the Declaration of an Emergency Situation in all areas of the Kingdom for another month and a half, from 1 December 2020 to 15 January 2021.

The decision was made following a proposal by the Office of the National Security Council in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

According to the Office of the National Security Council, as the coordinating office of the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the global situation of the COVID-19 outbreak remains severe in many parts of the world. Several countries have implemented lockdown measures again.

The COVID-19 situation in Thailand’s neighboring countries is also worrisome. Thailand needs to closely monitor the situation, as it has a risk of facing a second wave of COVID-19, since the virus has been found among tourists and those returning from foreign countries.

All relevant agencies deem it necessary to step up public health measures during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, as well as the HSBC BWF World Tour, an international badminton tournament, scheduled to take place in Thailand from 12 to 31 January 2021.

Moreover, mass gatherings of people for political protests in the country could also increase the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
