Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has assured that he could clarify where and how he obtained the luxury wristwatch and diamond ring from.
His assurance came after he was asked by reporters yesterday (Dec 11) to confirm widespread report on the social media that quoted him as saying that he was ready to clarify the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) that the diamond ring belonged to his mother and the watch was borrowed from a businessman friend.
He denied as untrue the report in the social media, saying that he had no idea where such report came from.
However, he assured reporters that ,don't worry, I'm ready to clarify these in details.
Gen Prawit was notified by the NACC on Dec 7 to clarify ownership of the two luxury items within 30 days or by Jan 7 next year.
But until yesterday no clarification was made to the NACC.
Under the anti-corruption law, persons holding political offices must declare their assets to the NACC. Any luxury item values over 200,000 baht is subject to be declared.
Gen Prawit assumed political office as deputy prime minister and defence minister in 2014. But the two luxury items are not among other assets he has declared.
The picture of Gen Prawit wearing the luxurious watch and diamond ring was snapped on Dec 4 when the cabinet ministers took group photos at the Government House.
The picture later went viral among the Thai social media users and led to calls by several parties for the NACC to investigate if the Deputy Prime Minister has declared the assets or not.
