Heavy Traffic Expected on Asia Road as Songkran Celebrations End

Bangkok: The Asian road heading into Bangkok through Chai Nat is densely packed as travelers return home after celebrating Songkran.

According to Thai News Agency, traffic on Highway No. 32, or Asia Road, has been heavy since the afternoon, with vehicles moving steadily at a rate of 3,600-4,300 per hour and an average speed of 70-80 kilometers per hour. However, congestion is noted at kilometer 139, near the Hang Nam Sakhon intersection in Manorom District, where cars slow to wait for the traffic light. Officials have adjusted the traffic lights to ease the flow towards Bangkok, allowing a green light for six minutes with a two-minute stop.

Highway No. 340 Chainat-Suphan Buri presents a viable alternative for those looking to avoid the congestion on Asia Road. Travelers are advised to turn right at Luang Pho O Intersection, Asia Road, kilometer 150 onto Phahonyothin Road, and continue to the Khaweng Tang Intersection in Mueang Chai Nat District. From there, the route leads onto Highway No. 340 to Suphan Buri, Nonthaburi, and into Bangkok. However, caution is advised as some sections are under construction, necessitating detours.

Similarly, traffic from Chaiyo District in Ang Thong Province to Maharat District in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province is experiencing increased vehicle volume, with speeds reduced to 30-40 kilometers per hour. Rest stops and construction zones, such as the one at Km. 55 in front of Ban Hun Lek and the bypass ring road at Km. 53, are causing slowdowns. It is anticipated that traffic will become heavier tonight.

Officials recommend an alternative route for travelers returning from the North. This involves using the road along the irrigation canal parallel to Asia Road, turning into the Wat Chaiyo Worawihan intersection, or entering Ang Thong town at Ang Thong Interchange. Travelers can then proceed onto Road 309 Ang Thong-Ayutthaya, passing through Pa Mok District to Thung Makham Yong Intersection, before turning onto Route 347 towards Bangkok. This route is expected to alleviate traffic issues and reduce travel time.
