Mobile phone repair technician apprehended on suspicion of modifying phones for insurgency

A mobile phone repair technician was arrested this morning in Samut Prakarn on suspicion of modifying mobile phones for terrorism purpose.

The raid by about 50 security personnel comprising soldiers and police at an apartment room on Soi Aksornlak in Muang district of Samut Prakarn came after the car bomb attack alert in the capital and its peripherals by southern militants.

The search at Room 34 found Mr Preecha Samali, 39, inside.

He was said to be a mobile phone repair technician working at a mobile vendor stall in Big C supercenter in Samut Prakarn province.

Seized from his room included several postal boxes, and a number of modified equipments for mobile phones.

But the officials are not yet certain if the modified equipments are meant for detonating bombs or not as they are still waiting for the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) police to examine.

He was detained pending more questioning if the suspect has any link to southern insurgency.
