“Monporn” Orders Strict Enforcement of Rocket Launch Measures Near Airports

Bangkok: "Monporn" has mandated the Royal Thai Army to strictly enforce safety measures for rocket launches near airports, emphasizing the importance of balancing tradition with safety during the Bun Bang Fai Festival. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Manop Jareonsri, Deputy Minister of Transport, has instructed the Department of Airports (DoA) to implement and promote safety measures for the launch of rockets, fireworks, and similar objects during the Boon Bang Fai Festival, held from May to June in the Northeast. Changes in the festival's format, including competitions for rocket height, have increased the risk of serious harm to aircraft and public safety. Mrs. Manop stressed the importance of aircraft and passenger safety, urging the Airports of Thailand (AOT) to publicize preventive measures for the 2025 Boon Bang Fai Festival. The guidelines are set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) and are part of the airport operation manual. The Ministry has requested cooperation from the public and relevant sectors to understand and adhere to these safety measures, promoting the coexistence of tradition and safety. Mr. Danai Ruangson, Director-General of the Department of Airports, stated that airports under his supervision have been instructed to seek public cooperation in refraining from launching rockets and similar objects in air navigation safety zones unless permitted. The Department has outlined procedures for obtaining permission, requiring individuals to submit detailed requests to local officials and notifying nearby airports 7-15 business days in advance. Violations of these measures carry severe penalties, including imprisonment or fines. If an aircraft is damaged or endangered, penalties can escalate to death, life imprisonment, or substantial fines, as per Section 59/1 of the Air Navigation Act B.E. 2497. The Rocket Festival, a traditional event among the Isan people, is held annually at the start of the rainy season to ask for rain. This year, various provinces in the Northeast ha ve scheduled Rocket Festivals throughout May, including events in Nakhon Phanom, Udon Thani, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon, Yasothon, Loei, Kalasin, Roi Et, and Si Sa Ket.
