Glasgow: The Soft Power subcommittee's efforts to make Muay Thai an international attraction have seen a significant milestone with the recent Muay Thai Master Class event held in Glasgow, Scotland. This initiative aims to draw foreign tourists back to Thailand, particularly during the low tourism season, by capitalizing on the increasing global interest in Muay Thai, allowing enthusiasts to indulge in the sport regardless of weather conditions.
According to Thai News Agency, the event witnessed the presence of Mr. Chalitrat Chantrubeksa, Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Sports Industry Promotion, who led the opening ceremony. Alongside him were key figures like Mrs. Prodprad Samanmit, Deputy Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand for Professional Sports and Boxing, and other notable officials. The gathering highlighted the collaborative effort to promote Muay Thai as a cultural and economic bridge between nations.
The Master Class featured renowned Muay Thai fighters, including Saenchai P.K. Saenchai Muay Thai Gym, Yodsanklai Fairtex, and local favorite Nico Carrillo. These athletes attracted over 300 participants eager to learn the intricacies of Muay Thai, from basic techniques to personalized fighting styles. The event's lively atmosphere underscored the enthusiasm of the Scottish attendees, many of whom traveled from nearby areas to participate.
In a move to strengthen ties and promote further engagement with Muay Thai, 10 local gyms in Scotland received the Standard Muaythai Gyms 2025 plaque, recognizing their compliance with standards set by the Boxing Sports Commission. Additionally, informative sessions were held to guide participants on applying for various Muaythai study visas, fostering opportunities for Scots to train in Thailand, thereby boosting local economies and cultural exchanges.
Mr. Chalitrat Chantrubeksa emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, noting that Scotland was the fourth country to host such an event following successful sessions in Hong Kong, Brazil, and England. He expressed confidence in the potential of Muay Thai to enhance tourism, particularly during Thailand's low season, by appealing to those eager to experience authentic Thai culture, cuisine, and martial arts training.
