National Sports Development Fund Board Approves Key Budget Increases for Upcoming Games

Bangkok: The Sports Development Fund Board, chaired by Surawong Thienthong, has approved several significant plans and budget allocations, aimed at enhancing Thailand's sports infrastructure and supporting its athletes in upcoming international events. This decision was made during the 5th/2025 meeting of the National Sports Development Fund Executive Committee, held at the Chaloem Phrakiat Building.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting, under the guidance of Deputy Prime Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, focused on several pivotal projects. Among the approved items was the preparation for Thailand to host the 33rd SEA Games and the 13th Para Games. This includes a 30 million baht investment to improve the rock climbing stadium and a 16 million baht renovation of the sports field in Nakhon Ratchasima Province.

The board has also sanctioned 17 million baht to support Thai athletes in the 3rd Asian Youth Games in Bahrain. Furthermore, a comprehensive budget framework and action plan for 2026 were approved, amounting to over 4.13 billion baht, alongside a continuous budget of approximately 491 million baht for the fiscal year starting October 2025.

Acknowledging the achievements of Thai athletes, the board approved prize money totaling 211,341,250 baht for those who secured medals in 32 international events. This includes significant allocations for associations such as the Thailand Rowing Association, the Taekwondo Association of Thailand, and the Amateur Weightlifting Association of Thailand.

Additionally, the board has allocated funds to support athletes competing in the 2025 FISU Summer World University Games and the Chengdu 2025 World Games, with a combined prize fund of over 52 million baht.

The meeting also recognized the necessity for plan adjustments and an additional budget framework of approximately 311 million baht. To ensure compliance with regulations, guidelines regarding prize money were discussed, particularly for associations using the term "of Thailand."

Minister Surawong emphasized discussions with the Prime Minister about involving the private sector in sponsorship roles, proposing tax incentives to encourage their participation. This strategy aims to lessen the financial burden on the government and promote sustainable growth in Thai sports. Moreover, the requirement for all sports associations to develop transparent budget plans was highlighted, ensuring effective distribution of resources from youth to national levels.
