OBEC Refutes Claims of Schools Serving Rotten Produce to Students.

Bangkok: The Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) has unveiled the results of an investigation regarding allegations that schools were providing students with rotten vegetables and fruits for lunch. The investigation confirmed that these claims are unfounded. Additionally, concerns about a school allegedly forcing the distribution of Kathin and Pha Pa envelopes to fund a van purchase were addressed, with explanations provided that regulations were adhered to, and funds were not used for van acquisition. According to Thai News Agency, Lt. Col. Thanu Wongchinda, Secretary-General of the Basic Education Commission, addressed the allegations involving a school in Chachoengsao Province accused of serving rotten fruit to students. Concurrently, another school in Nakhon Ratchasima Province faced criticism for allegedly compelling parents to donate for a school van purchase. The Happiness and Safety Management Center, in conjunction with the educational service area office, was tasked with investigating t hese reports promptly. The investigation in Chachoengsao involved a fact-finding committee that collected evidence to ensure fairness. Interviews with students revealed no instances of consuming rotten produce or experiencing related illnesses, such as diarrhea or vomiting. Students reported having satisfactory meals daily, leading to the conclusion that the accusations were baseless. In Nakhon Ratchasima, a team including a legal officer, director of the Education Promotion Group, and a psychologist investigated the funding allegations. The school clarified adherence to regulations, provided clear receipts, and confirmed that the funds were not used to purchase a van. Consequently, the Nakhon Ratchasima Secondary Educational Service Area Office halted the donation process and instructed the school to improve communication with parents and students while reinforcing strict compliance with regulations. OBEC has urged educational service area offices to ensure adherence to regulations, maintain transparency, and communicate effectively with all stakeholders to uphold the integrity of educational institutions.
