Region 9 Cracks Safe Break-In Case with Unique Clue

Hat Yai: The Region 9 Investigation Team has successfully apprehended a suspect involved in a series of thefts, including a daring safe break-in, using an unusual clue: the suspect's flip-flops and toes.

According to Thai News Agency, the Provincial Police Region 9 Investigation Unit arrested Mr. Irfan, a 29-year-old from Pattani Province, at a rented house in Village 7, Khlong Hae Subdistrict, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. Mr. Irfan was accused of committing multiple thefts in Hat Yai District and nearby areas, disturbing the local community.

The most recent incident involved Mr. Irfan breaking into a safe at a residence on Pracha Muslim Road, Village 8, Khlong Hae Subdistrict. He reportedly executed the crime methodically over several hours, using a grinder to breach the safe. Despite running out of supplies, Mr. Irfan returned to the scene three times to complete the theft, eventually acquiring 3 baht of gold and cash. After the crime, he disposed of the cement from the safe beside the house and fled on a motorcycle. Authorities later reenacted the crime scene with Mr. Irfan to secure his confession.

The investigation team began their pursuit with minimal evidence-a glimpse of cream-colored sandals and the suspect's toes captured on CCTV. The culprit had cleverly used a stick to tilt the CCTV camera, obscuring his identity. However, footage revealed his sandals and toes, leading investigators to track his escape route. They identified a suspect riding a Yamaha Mio motorcycle registered in Songkhla, who matched the description. This led them to Mr. Irfan's rented accommodation, where they discovered the sandals, a grinding stone, and other evidence totaling 18 items. Mr. Irfan confessed to selling and spending the stolen gold and cash.

Further investigation revealed Mr. Irfan had targeted three houses in Hat Yai District. Authorities suspect his involvement in additional crimes, as a background check uncovered an existing arrest warrant from the Nathawi Provincial Court dated January 9, 2025, related to another theft case. Mr. Irfan is currently out on bail for a separate theft charge.

Authorities have filed charges against Mr. Irfan for theft involving the destruction of property barriers and unauthorized entry, utilizing a vehicle to aid in committing the crime or evading arrest, and handling stolen goods.
