A German tourist is being treated at a private hospital in Phuket, with the first lab test producing a positive result for monkeypox, according to Phuket’s Provincial Health Chief Dr. Kusak Kukiattikoon.

Reconfirmation of the diagnosis, from the Medical Sciences Department and the Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University, is pending.

Dr. Kusak said that the patient did not have any connection with the first confirmed case, a Nigerian man, who had stayed in Phuket since last October and went to Cambodia late last month having refused treatment in Thailand.

Director-General of the Disease Control Department Dr. Opart Karnkawinpong said that the 25-year-old German patient arrived in Phuket on July 18th and he later visited a private hospital for examination after he developed a fever, rashes and blisters on his body.

He added that he believes the man was infected before his arrival in Thailand.

The second confirmed monkeypox case is a 47-year-old Thai man with a history of having unprotected sex with a foreign man.
