Poipet: The second day of strict measures banning Thai nationals from entering casinos and gambling dens in Poipet saw continued adherence, with most Thais cooperating with the restrictions. Casino employees, however, expressed hopes for a swift resolution to resume their work.
According to Thai News Agency, the Burapha Task Force's order, which came into effect at 8:00 a.m. on June 17, prevents both Thai employees and gamblers from crossing into Poipet. The new rules have significantly reduced the usual queues at the Khlong Luek immigration checkpoint, where lines often begin as early as 3 a.m. Today, there were no queues of Thai nationals; instead, 289 Thais crossed into Poipet and 2,416 returned. The checkpoint primarily saw Laotians stamping exit documents to extend their stay in Thailand for work purposes, with many awaiting MOUs.
Thais with valid business-related evidence were permitted to cross into Poipet. Meanwhile, Thai casino workers expressed a desire for a return to normalcy. A minor incident occurred as the border was closing, involving three Thais who approached immigration police claiming they were tricked into illegal work through natural channels. One individual resorted to shaving his head and pretending to have cancer to escape, revealing the ruse by removing his wig.
