Trang: A traditional Chinese steamed cake shop in Trang province is experiencing a surge in orders this Chinese New Year, with requests totaling over 1,000 kilograms from both domestic and international customers. Despite the rising costs of ingredients, the shop has maintained its prices.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Fonruthai Songrob, a 42-year-old freelance singer, and her family are busily preparing these cakes at her home in Tambon Thap Thiang, Amphoe Mueang, Trang Province. The production is a family affair, with 5-6 relatives helping in the entirely hand-made process. Ms. Fonruthai reports that this year, orders have surpassed 1,000 kilograms. The cakes are priced at 120-130 baht per kilogram for the white sticky rice cake and 150 baht per kilogram for the black sticky rice cake, attracting customers from within and outside the province, including Malaysia.
Despite an increase in the cost of raw materials such as banana leaves, sugar, and cooking gas, Ms. Fonruthai is committed to keeping the prices stable for her customers. The family tradition extends to her 13-year-old grandson, who helps with the production after school. He finds the work enjoyable and sees it as an opportunity to hone his skills in traditional steamed bun making.
