Trang Villagers Boost Economy with Popular Sun-Dried Catfish Production.

Trang: A group of enterprising villagers in Trang Province has found a lucrative venture in the production of sun-dried catfish, which has become so successful that it has led to an increase in catfish farming in the region. This initiative has created jobs and significantly boosted the local economy, generating tens of thousands of baht in additional income each month. According to Thai News Agency, the Ban Na To Ming Career Development Group, located in Village No. 6, Na To Ming Subdistrict, Mueang District, has been at the forefront of this endeavor. The group has developed a unique recipe for sun-dried catfish that has captivated customers with its fragrant, sweet, and fatty meat. Their product, free from seasoning powders and preservatives, boasts a storage life of up to three months, resulting in orders of up to 200 kilograms per week. The process involves using fresh catfish, which is trimmed, washed, and lightly pounded to soften the meat and bones. It is then marinated with salt and sugar for three days before being sun-dried for a day. The final product is packaged in 200-gram packs, with pricing set at 100 baht per pack or 250 baht per kilogram. Mrs. Wanee Chuaymee, president of the group, highlights the benefits of their product, emphasizing its fresh, sweet taste and absence of preservatives, making it appealing to health-conscious customers. The sun-dried catfish can be used in various dishes and has gained popularity through word of mouth, prompting repeat purchases. To support the growing demand, the group is encouraging more villagers to raise catfish, purchasing them at 60 baht per kilogram. This not only provides the group with an additional income of 300-400 baht daily but also offers a steady source of income for local farmers.
