Trat People Uphold Songkran Traditions by Building Sand Pagodas

Bangkok: Trat people come out to make merit for good fortune, carry sand to the temple and build sand pagodas, continuing the tradition on Songkran Day. On Songkran Day, Trat people come out to make merit at various temples for good fortune. In the atmosphere at the Sala Karn Parian, Wat Pai Lom, Mueang Trat District, in addition to making merit, there is also the carrying of sand to the temple and the construction of sand pagodas, a popular tradition during Songkran according to ancient beliefs.

According to Thai News Agency, the Songkran Festival in Buriram Province organized a flower float procession, carrying sacred Buddha images from 14 temples, along with a dance procession from 14 temple compounds, 25 communities, from in front of Lam Plai Mat Train Station along various roads in the municipality to the Lam Plai Mat Municipality Office, where people could bathe the Buddha images during the Songkran Festival. In addition, there was a merit-making ceremony, offering rice and dry food to monks, building sand pagodas, pouring water to ask for blessings from the elderly, and setting up a water tunnel for people to play in.
