UNESCO Recognizes ‘Kebaya’ as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Bangkok: UNESCO has announced the inclusion of 'Kebaya' as an intangible cultural heritage, a joint recognition for Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. This decision was revealed by the Ministry of Culture and is set to be officially registered in 2024. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sudawan Wangsupakitchkosol, Minister of Culture, shared that the decision was made during the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. This session, held by UNESCO, took place on December 4, 2024, in the Republic of Paraguay. The 'Kebaya', a traditional dress representing the shared cultural heritage of these five nations, will join the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This marks another significant milestone for Thailand, following the recent registration of 'Tom Yum Goong' and making it the sixth cultural heritage item recognized by UNESCO. The Ministry of Culture has a strategic plan to leverage this rec ognition to promote cultural heritage. The plan aims to drive economic growth by integrating the cultural heritage into various sectors such as food, fashion, film, and tourism. Entrepreneurs are encouraged to incorporate 'Tom Yum Goong' into their offerings to enhance cultural awareness and boost economic activity. This initiative also focuses on community engagement by promoting tourism and cultural campaigns that highlight the 'Kebaya' culture. To celebrate this occasion, the Ministry of Culture, through the Department of Cultural Promotion, has organized a 'Tom Yum Goong and Kebaya Celebration' event from December 6-8, 2024, at Quartier Avenue, EmQuartier Shopping Mall. The event will feature an opening ceremony by Minister Sudawan Wangsupakitchkosol, culinary demonstrations by renowned chefs, and a fashion show of Kebaya dresses. Visitors can also enjoy exhibitions and cultural performances throughout the event, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the involved countries.
