Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul has reached out to key international leaders in a bid to address the escalating border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia. Anutin revealed through a Facebook post that he engaged in discussions with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump, seeking their support to ensure Cambodian compliance with the Kuala Lumpur Declaration.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin detailed his conversation with the leaders, emphasizing the necessity for Cambodia to adhere to the agreement signed on October 26, 2025. He highlighted the discovery of new landmines allegedly placed by Cambodia in Thai territory, a move that contradicts the declaration's terms and has resulted in injuries to Thai soldiers.
Anutin outlined Thailand's position, asserting that operations under the declaration would be halted until Cambodia acknowledges its breach and issues an apology. He stressed the importance of protecting Thai sovereignty and called on Anwar and Trump, as declaration witnesses, to hold Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen accountable.
The discussions also touched on economic matters, with Anutin seeking a reduction in US tariffs on Thai goods. Trump indicated willingness to consider this if Thailand successfully managed demining efforts. Meanwhile, Anwar pledged to expedite ASEAN's documentation to reinforce the declaration's conditions.
Anutin concluded by expressing disappointment over Cambodia's actions, citing past Thai support for Cambodian refugees. He reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to regional peace but noted the country's readiness to defend its sovereignty against foreign threats.
