Kanchanaburi: "Khao Tom," a disabled baby elephant abandoned by its herd, is currently under the care of officials at the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Management Development Center and is showing signs of improvement. The young elephant, named "Nong Khao Tom," is making efforts to stand and walk while being closely monitored by veterinary staff. According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Kanchana Silpa-archa, also known as "Khun Noona," visited the center to check on the condition of the baby elephant, originally from Lam Khlong Ngu National Park in Kanchanaburi Province. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation is overseeing the rehabilitation process. Ms. Kanchana expressed her concerns and discussed with the veterinary team the necessary medical equipment and supplies required for the elephant's care. She refrained from touching "Nong Khao Tom" to maintain its hygiene. Dr. Natthanon Panphet, head of the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Sanctuary and the Bueng Chawak Wildlife Management Development Center, confirmed that "Nong Khao Tom" is stable and can drink milk effectively. The baby elephant is attempting to stand and walk, with assistance from the staff. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation previously consulted with experts from the National Elephant Institute, the Faculty of Medical Technology at Chiang Mai University, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Kasetsart University. Their diagnosis revealed that "Nong Khao Tom" suffers from a congenital front leg tendon disorder. The recommended treatment includes physical therapy, such as ultrasound therapy, joint stretching, and electromagnetic stimulation, along with nutritional management and comprehensive health care.
