GA-ASI Makes First Flight of XQ-67A OBSS

SAN DIEGO, CA / ACCESSWIRE / February 29, 2024 / General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) flew the XQ-67A Off-Board Sensing Station (OBSS) for the first time on Feb. 28, 2024. OBSS is an Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) program and GA-ASI was selected in 2021 to design, build and fly the new aircraft.

With flight of the AFRL-funded XQ-67A, GA-ASI has validated the "genus/species" concept first developed with AFRL as part of the Low-Cost Attritable Aircraft Platform Sharing (LCAAPS) program focused on building several aircraft variants from a common core chassis.

Under LCAAPS, AFRL and GA-ASI explored the development of a chassis, termed a "genus", as the foundational core architecture from which several "species" of aircraft can be built.

"This provides an alternative acquisition approach for military aircraft that enables faster development, lower costs and more opportunities for frequent technology refresh," said Trenton White, OBSS Program Manager and aerospace engineer in AFRL’s Aerospace Systems Directorate. "XQ-67A is the first ‘species’ to be designed and built from this shared platform. Flight demonstration of this system is a major first step toward showing the ability to produce affordable combat mass."

"OBSS is the first aircraft type built and flown using a common core chassis developed by GA-ASI that promotes commonality across multiple vehicle types," said GA-ASI Vice President of Advanced Programs Michael Atwood.

Ajido wins PH’s first gold in Asian age group swimming tourney

CAPAS: Jamesray Mishael Ajido ruled the boys’ 12-14 100m butterfly event on Wednesday night to give the host Philippines its first gold medal in the 11th Asian Age Group Championships at the New Clark City Aquatics Center here.

The 15-year-old clocked 55.98 to erase the meet record of 56.36 set by Chinese Wang Yu Xiang in 2019.

Japan’s Yusei Nishiono also had a record-breaking performance of 56.05 to pocket the silver medal while Chinese Taipei’s Yung-Cheng Kan settled for the bronze medal in 56.79.

“I was expecting to win a medal, but I’m not sure what color. I’m happy that I won the gold,” Ajido said after pocketing his second medal in the tournament organized by the Philippine Aquatics, Inc. headed by Miko Vargas.

Ajido, a Grade 8 student at the La Salle Greenhills, bagged the bronze medal in the 50m freestyle, with a time of 24.34 – a personal best and a national record – last Tuesday.

Japan’s Toya Hirata captured the gold medal in 23.21, a new meet record that broke the 24.03 time set by compatriot
Yuga Takashima in 2019.

‘This is special for me. I am proud to win a medal for the Philippines. I dedicate my victory to the Lord and my family,’ he said after claiming his first medal.

Ajido had a fruitful campaign in local and international tournaments last year, grabbing two silvers at the SEA Age Group Championships in Indonesia.

He won the 100m butterfly and 100m backstroke gold medals in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Season 99 and hauled five gold and one bronze medals at the Batang Pinoy National Championships.

PH bids to host FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025

MANILA: The Philippines on Thursday formalized its bid to host the prestigious FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025 where 31 of the world’s best nations plus the country’s national team will showcase elite action in the sport from Sept. 12 to 28.

‘As they say, teamwork makes the dream work and this meeting is a first major step towards the dream of a successful bid and eventual hosting of the men’s world championship,’ Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) president Ramon ‘Tats’ Suzara said during the Special Briefing of the Philippines Bid to Host the FIVB Volleyball World Men’s Championship 2025 at the Grand Hyatt Manila at the BGC in Taguig City.

Present at the special meeting were staunch sports and volleyball advocate Senator Pia Cayetano, Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, and FIVB brass Volleyball World CEO Finn Taylor and Chief Business Officer Guido Betti.

The Philippine bid rides the heels of the PNVF’s successful staging of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL), which t
he top FIVB officials praised as the best-hosted editions – 2022 and 2023 – with an enormous local fan reaction never seen elsewhere in the world.

‘The VNL last year at the MOA (Mall of Asia) Arena was the best event of the VNL and we had 14 stops around the world,’ Taylor said. ‘It shows that the Philippines has embraced the best of volleyball and we were able to see that not only the fans embraced the players but teams embraced the fans. They can’t wait to come back.’

‘We see a massive potential in the Philippines. We decided to bring the VNL here two years ago and the fandom was crazy. We’re overwhelmed and with that being said, players will be happy to come back,’ Betti said. ‘Love from the people here was unique that all the volleyball players are dreaming for.’

The PNVF hosted two weeks – men and women – of the VNL at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum in 2022 and a men’s leg at the SM Mall of Asia Arena last year.

Both major venues are again eyed for next year’s world championship.

Also gracing the occasi
on were Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann, Philippine Olympic Committee secretary general Warton Chan who represented president Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino, Jennifer Reyes and Monica Mitra representing Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Erwin Lozano representing Senator Sonny Angara, and Sienna Olaso, vice president for Channels and Content at Cignal TV, Inc.

Representatives of the MOA Arena; United Promotions, Inc. of the Araneta Group Management; and the Tourism Promotions Board also attended the meeting.

‘I’m here to support and express the commitment of our government, specifically the DOT (Department of Tourism), to ensure that the Philippines’ bid to host this global event is likely successful,’ Frasco said.

Cayetano gamely shared her experiences as a former varsity and national volleyball player as she committed Taguig City and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano’s support for the country’s hosting of the world championship.

‘I assure that the Senate will do everything in its power for this e
vent. We’ve come a long way and we’re so excited to be part of this journey,’ she said. ‘We know that 2025 is a year that will bring much pride to the Philippines and share the love the Filipinos have.’

The Philippines has not been to the men’s world championship since the 1974 edition in Mexico.

The FIVB and Volleyball World will make a formal announcement of the successful bid by the end of March.

Projects to boost water supply in Sorsogon launched

SORSOGON: PrimeWater and joint venture partner, Sorsogon City Water District (SCWD), have inaugurated San Lorenzo Well No. 2 and held a groundbreaking ceremony for the San Lorenzo Pumping Station 2, two projects that are expected to significantly boost the daily water supply and improve water services across multiple barangays here.

Located in Sitio San Lorenzo, Barangay Bibincahan, the deep well will deliver an additional 2,000 cubic meters per day of water to address the growing demand for water in concessionaires at Barangays Bibincahan, Almendras Cogon, Balogo, Salog and Sampaloc.

‘Tayo po ay natutuwa na makita ang commitment ng PrimeWater para sa ikabubuti ng water supply dito sa Sorsogon (We are happy with the commitment of PrimeWater to improve water supply here in Sorsogon). We will keep on working and cooperating with each other to continue enhancing our water service for the people of Sorsogon City,’ Sorsogon City Water District Interim General Manager Eduardo Tejada said in a news release on Thur

A 40-horsepower submersible pump and motor have been installed, along with diameter riser pipes, to further enhance the efficiency of transporting water from the deep well to households above ground.

‘PrimeWater and SCWD have jointly undertaken this initiative to further enhance the quality and reliability of the water service we provide to our consumers in the city,’ PrimeWater Sorsogon City branch manager engineer Ronel Roger Pereyra said.

To guarantee compliance with the 2017 Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water, which aim to safeguard public health, a test run activity was also conducted to ensure that the water quality from the new source development meets the required standards.

Apart from the completion of San Lorenzo Well No. 2, the PrimeWater-SCWD partnership has laid almost 2,000 linear meters of new pipelines to facilitate the efficient delivery of additional water supply to consumers.

The daily bulk water supply sourced from the SCWD deep well and the daily recoverable volum
e from the pipeline decommissioning project in the West service area highlight PrimeWater-SCWD’s proactive initiatives towards fulfilling their vision of delivering a more consistent and stable water supply to the barangays within their service areas.

The event was also attended by Sorsogon City Mayor Ma. Ester Hamor and Councilor Mark Jayson Dechavez Jamisola, as well as the SCWD Board of Directors led by chairperson Charles Clemente III.

Guv urged to convene price coordinating council amid high pork prices

DUMAGUETE CITY: Public clamor continued for the provincial government to curb the rising prices of pork in Negros Oriental despite the lifting of the ban on the inbound shipment of live hogs into the province.

Livestock sellers said the live hogs bought from local suppliers have become more costly.

On the other hand, consumers are also complaining of the ‘skyrocketing’ prices of pork in the market, noting that the price of lechon or roasted pig these days has almost doubled.

Amid all these complaints, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) here has written Governor Manuel Sagarbarria to immediately convene the Provincial Price Coordinating Council to address the growing problem.

In her letter to Sagarbarria recently, DTI-Negros Oriental chief Nimfa Virtucio, said the recent surge in livestock prices has become a ‘pressing concern for both local producers and consumers.’

‘This alarming trend not only poses challenges to the viability of our agricultural sector but also threatens the economic well-bein
g of our residents, particularly those who rely on affordable meat products for their sustenance,’ she said Thursday.

She said the DTI believes convening the multi-sectoral PPCC and the Task Force African Swine Fever could better address the problem.

Virtucio earlier said that while the DTI has no jurisdiction over the price control of livestock, their concern is the impact on consumers affected by soaring prices.

The public has been clamoring on social media for concerned agencies to step in and stop the rising prices of pork, which they said has gone up to as much as PHP400 per kg.

Contingency protocol saves PCSO 3-digit draw

MANILA: The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) on Thursday confirmed that a minor glitch occurred during its 3-digit game 2 PM draw on Feb. 27 after one of its draw machines failed to capture one of the winning balls.

The 3-digit draw offers a top prize of PHP4,500 for each winning ticket.

PCSO General Manager Mel Robles explained that their technical team immediately responded and fixed the problem by using the standby machine, which was approved based on the ISO 9001-2018 procedure.

‘It’s not the first time that this happens and we want to assure the public that we are prepared for this kind of unexpected incident with our established ISO-approved protocols,’ he said in a news release.

Robles added that the PCSO experienced a glitch in one of its draws in 2008 and similar incidents have happened even in the United States when their lottery machines also malfunctioned.

In the past 25 years, this was only the second time that a minor glitch had occurred at PCSO while conducting an official draw

‘For this thing to happen is very remote. But we are prepared and we assure the public that our commitment to a transparent, fair, and authentic lottery games will never waver, and is as strong as ever,’ Robles said.

Comelec: 2 firms eligible to bid for 2025 polls transmission system

MANILA: The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday declared two joint venture (JV) firms as eligible to bid for the Secure Electronic Transmission Services (SETS) project to be utilized in next year’s midterm polls.

The Comelec-Special Bids and Awards Committee (SBAC) allowed the JV of EBizolution, Inc. – Secur Links Network and Technologies Inc.-Systems Information and Solutions Corporation (Ebiz), and the JV of Ione Resources Inc.-Ardent Networks, Inc. (Ione Resources) to participate in the bidding for the project with an approved budget for the contract (ABC) worth PHP1.638 billion.

In Resolution No. 1, the SBAC declared Ione Resources as having the lowest calculated bid (LCB) at PHP1.426 billion.

“The Technical Working Group (TWG) is hereby directed to subject the bidder with the LCB for said procurement project to post-qualification evaluation,” the SBAC said.

Meanwhile, EBiz tendered a bid of PHP1.628 billion.

Both companies are the only ones that submitted bids for the SETS project.

The SE
TS will be used to transmit election results using telecommunication networks.

It also includes the provision of data centers and connectivity requirements for the Automated Election System (AES) servers.

Meanwhile, Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said the new SETS is set to make the quick count operations of poll watchdogs faster in the scheduled polls.

“The quick count operations will be faster as the PPCRV (Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting), Namfrel (National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections), LENTE (Legal Network for Truthful Elections) will have their own servers instead of sourcing it from just one. From their (own server), they can immediately start their quick count,” he said in an interview.

Quick counts are unofficial election results being conducted by poll watchdogs based on the transmitted election returns.
