Police from Thailand’s Consumer Protection Division (CPD) seized fake cosmetics and substandard medical supplies today (Monday), worth about 14 million baht, in raids on two locations in Bangkok’s Prawet District and in Samut Prakan province.

A Chinese national found at one of the two sites, a warehouse and packaging office, was arrested.

The raids followed an investigation by the CPD, after it had received complaints from legitimate producers of cosmetics that imitation products have been available online for about three months.

Police found more than 67,000 items of fake cosmetics, fake toothpaste and some substandard medical equipment and rubber gloves in the warehouse in Samut Prakan and at the packaging office in Prawet District.

The Chinese suspect, identified only as “Zhong”, told the police that he is just an employee charged with looking after the products, which were imported from China.

CPD police commander, Pol Maj-Gen Anan Nanasombat, said that the owner of the fake products is also a Chinese man and all the goods came from China and have been sold via online platforms to some 15 Thai traders.

Weerachai Nolwachai, deputy secretary-general of the Thai Food and Drug Administration, meanwhile, said that any products which are offered for sale at unusually low prices should be assumed to be fake.
